Who
I'm an optometrist. And a few years ago, I found myself completely burnt out. I felt guilty for taking a break, and I felt like I was not meeting the society norms - do well in school, graduate university and get a great job.
I developed an autoimmune condition that flares with stress and anxiety. In those times, I reached for familiarity and comfort. Soft plushies. Matcha. Bubble Tea. I imagined myself back to the days of Japan, strolling the streets and visiting each Family Mart and 7-Eleven.
I realised that amongst the overwhelm, I stopped putting me and my happiness first. And this is the reason behind bread x butter. Its a brand of Japanese tradition to bring comfort and
reassurance to those who give everything, and forget that they matter too.

Matcha FAQs
The Nitty Gritty
-
Matcha offers a gentle, sustained boost of energy thanks to its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine. Together, they promote calm focus and alertness — giving you steady energy without the crash that often comes with coffee.
Research by Sokary et al. (2023) suggests that the natural compounds in matcha — like caffeine, L-theanine, and catechins — can help ease stress and anxiety, while supporting focus, memory, and overall cognitive function, all without affecting mood.

Our matcha powder is so fine that it can be easily whisked with cold water or shaken on the go for a quick fix. When preparing matcha traditionally in a chawan with a bamboo whisk (chasen), water temperature plays an important role in unlocking its nutrients and flavour.
Traditionally, water of about 70°C is poured into the bowl, and the mixture is whisked until smooth and frothy. This temperature helps preserve matcha’s delicate compounds and antioxidant quality. However, research by Korn et al. (2024) found that infusions prepared at 90°C are actually the most abundant in bioactive compounds — including polyphenols and vitamin C — giving them an even higher antioxidant potential.

Meet Oliver
Oliver is the heart and face of our brand — a
symbol of nostalgia and ease. Like the teddy bears that once brought (and maybe still bring) us comfort, Oliver represents the same gentle feeling that a cup of matcha offers — familiar, calming, and grounding.
